Club retain Breckland five pairs title

In a repeat ot last seasons final at Shropham against Connaught A it was a hard fought win with the matches a lot closer this time round. Billie Barker and Jack pye were the first pairing on and produced a solid 13-5 win against Diane Adcock and Sylvia Parsons. Jack was in good form throughout the ten ends and was the main player in the match to make things happen. Their best spell was from ends two to five which saw them pick up a 2,3,3,2 to lead 10-3. The second pairing saw Pat Saunders and Debbie Sparham snatch a 9-7 win over Mike Parsons and Joe Li-Rocchi. The Connaught pairing made a bright start with Mike leading well for Connaught and Joe giving good backup as they led 1-4 after five ends but a poor Connaught end saw them drop four shots to let Wymondham back in the match. Three shots picked up on end eight gave Pat and Deb an 8-5 lead and ended up winning the match having won just four ends. The match was a missed oppourtunity by Connaught to get back in the tie at that stage having seen them 1-4 up. Chris Mann and Roger Steele were up against Dave Quadling and Bob Oatway, which saw a somewhat scrappy encounter. Roger and Chris did not play to their best and were fortunate not to be trailing when some shots went against Bob at skip for Connaught. Both pairs won five ends with the 6-6 result a fair reflection of the match. After an interval Melvyn Barker and Mark Linsdell claimed another late win for Wymondham this time against Diane Quadling and Owen Secker 11-8. Four shots picked up on end four gave the Wymondham pair a 5-3 lead but Connaught hit back winning three of the next five ends to lead 7-8 with one end remaining. It turns out the shot Mark played with his final bowl on the last end was slightly fortuitous as he missed what he intended to play for but instead got a perfect result which ended up in him taking all three Connaught bowls out the head and off the mat to pick up a second four of the match, much to the disappointment of Diane and Owen who probably felt they did enough to get something out the match. With the overall score now 39-26 with one match to go John Jeffery and Jon Sparham had the job to protect the thirteen shot lead against Jack Marshall and Lee Fallows. After four ends a Connaught comeback looked on when the pair lead 1-5 after four ends with Jon having to play some good shots to keep score down. End five however saw Connaught hopes dashed when Jon played another good shot to claim three shots and with John coming back into the match at lead produced a brace on end six for the pair to lead 6-5. The tie was decided with three ends to spare with the score at 6-6 meaning only twelve shots were available with the lead at thirteen. The match ended with Connaught winning 9-11 but losing 48-37 overall. The club wishes to thank Shropham for their services during the final and Connaught for an enjoyable final played in good spirit. Also thanks go to Bob Oatway for a superbly run league season again and all his efforts.
